English:
Hello, families and future explorers! Welcome to the Stone Forest — a place where the rocks themselves tell stories! Today we're going on a special adventure together: we'll walk into a "forest grown from stone," meet the Sani people who've lived here for centuries, and search for a few magical rocks that seem to "transform" right before our eyes. Kids, are you ready to be junior explorers today?
The Stone Forest is located about 78 kilometers southeast of Kunming, and it's one of the world's most spectacular examples of karst landscape. It was named a National 5A Scenic Area in 2007 — China's highest tourism rating — and became a UNESCO World Geopark in 2004. Together with the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, the frost scenery of Jilin, and the landscapes of Guilin, it's known as one of "China's Four Great Natural Wonders." Our tour today will take about 3 to 4 hours, and we'll explore it step by step: the overview, Yi culture, Stone Forest Lake, how the rocks were formed, the Big Stone Forest, and finally the Small Stone Forest.
Family Tip:
Give the kids a "magic number" to remember: 270 million — that's how many years ago the Stone Forest began forming, even earlier than the dinosaurs! Ask them to imagine traveling back in time to the bottom of an ancient ocean.
English:
Before we step into the stone forest itself, let's meet the people who call this place home — the Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group. "Sani" actually means "happy people" in the Yi language — isn't that a lovely name?
The Yi people have worshipped the tiger since ancient times as a symbol of strength and dignity, so you'll often spot tiger patterns in their embroidery. And speaking of embroidery — Sani women are true master craftswomen. Their handbags, headscarves, and aprons are covered in beautifully colorful patterns.
Here's a fun fact for the kids: you can actually tell whether a Sani woman is married just by looking at her headdress! Two little triangle ornaments standing up means she's unmarried; just one triangle means she's engaged; and an all-black headdress with no triangles means she's married. So later, when we meet local ladies in traditional dress, see if you can guess!
Young Sani people also have a wonderfully romantic way of falling in love — the young man plays a bamboo flute, and the young woman plays a leaf like a whistle, and they "talk" to each other through music. Much more romantic than texting, don't you think?
Every year on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, the Sani people celebrate their biggest festival — the Torch Festival, sometimes called the "Sani New Year." People carry blazing torches, sing, dance around bonfires, and enjoy bullfighting, wrestling, and horse racing.
Family Tip:
Pair the kids up and let them role-play the "flute and leaf" courtship — one pretends to play the flute, the other the leaf — and try to guess what the other is "saying" through music.

English:
Here we are at Stone Forest Lake, right at the entrance to the scenic area. Interestingly, this lake didn't exist naturally! In 1955, when former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai visited the Stone Forest, he felt that rocks alone might look a little plain, so he suggested digging an artificial lake here to keep the stones company. And that's how the lake you see today came to be.
There's a rock in the lake that looks remarkably like Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy — so locals also call it "Guanyin Lake." Kids, keep your eyes open and see if you can spot the "Guanyin rock" in the water!
Family Tip:
"Find the Guanyin rock" is a great warm-up game — it gets kids excited about spotting shapes in the rocks, which sets the tone for the "shape-shifting stones" theme ahead.
How Was the Stone Forest Formed?
English:
Kids, did you know that the ground we're standing on right now used to be the bottom of an ancient sea — about 270 million years ago?
Back then, the sea was shallow enough that sunlight could reach all the way to the bottom. Countless corals and tiny sea creatures lived and died here, and their remains sank and piled up, layer upon layer. Over an enormous span of time, sunlight and seawater slowly turned these layers into thick beds of limestone.
Later, movements in the Earth's crust — like giant puzzle pieces colliding — caused the sea to retreat, and the limestone that had been sitting on the seafloor was gradually pushed upward, becoming dry land. For millions of years afterward, rain and seeping water eroded the surface of the limestone, carving cracks that grew deeper and sharper over time — until they became the tall, freestanding stone pillars we see today, forming what looks just like a forest made of stone.
So every step we take today is actually a walk across an ancient ocean floor! That's exactly why the Stone Forest is often called "a masterpiece of nature."
Family Tip:
Have the kids act it out: "If you were a raindrop 270 million years ago, how would you slowly carve the rock into today's shape?" Let them mime the dripping motion — it helps the science stick.
English:
Now we're entering the "Big Stone Forest," where the rock formations are tall and densely packed, standing like a mighty giant guarding the whole park.
Lion Pavilion & Lion Pond:
Look at the rocks beside this pond — don't they look like a group of playful little lions? That's why it's called Lion Pond. Right next to it stands Lion Pavilion, the highest point in the Stone Forest at 1,750 meters above sea level, offering a sweeping view of the entire park.
The Rock Screen & Marshal Zhu De's Couplet:
This massive rock ahead of us looks just like a screen, completely blocking our view — that's why it's called the "Rock Screen." Beside it is a couplet carved during a visit by Marshal Zhu De in 1962: "Clusters of steep peaks tower into the clear sky; layers of high rocks resemble jade screens" — a perfect description of the Stone Forest's grandeur.
"The Most Wonderful Scene of Stone Forest" Plaza:
Once we pass the Rock Screen, we arrive at the most famous photo spot in the whole park — the giant rock carved with two bold red Chinese characters meaning "Stone Forest." This name was given in 1931 by Long Yun, the governor of Yunnan at the time, who was so amazed by the scenery that he coined this poetic name. These two characters have since appeared in countless newspapers, magazines, and postcards — it's basically the "signature photo" of the whole park, so make sure to take a family photo here!
The Narrowest Pass & Sword Peak Pond:
A little further on, you'll find the "Narrowest Pass" — a gap only 30 centimeters wide, just enough for one person to squeeze through at a time. Legend says whoever passes through smoothly will have good luck — kids, who wants to try? After the pass, we reach Sword Peak Pond, surrounded by tall, sharp rock spires that look like bundles of swords standing upright. The water here stays crystal clear all year round, and locals call it "the eye of the Stone Forest."
Two Feeding Birds:
Further along, natural erosion has carved a rock into the shape of two birds feeding each other. Locals say it represents the selfless love between a mother and her child — kids, remember to give your mom an extra hug later!
Family Tip:
The "Narrowest Pass" challenge and "spot the two birds" activity are the two most popular moments with kids in this section — it's worth slowing down here to let families take photos and enjoy the moment.

English:
If the Big Stone Forest feels like a mighty giant, the Small Stone Forest feels more like a graceful young woman — the rocks here are more scattered rather than densely packed, giving it a softer, more delicate charm.
Lotus Lake:
At the entrance to the Small Stone Forest is an artificial lake named "Lotus Lake" after a rock in the water that resembles a lotus flower in full bloom. With its pavilions, winding corridors, and stone tables and chairs, it's a lovely spot to rest and feed the fish — perfect for a family break. Along the lakeside, you'll also find four rocks that resemble the four main characters from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West — the monk Tangseng, the Monkey King, Pigsy, and Sandy. Any fans of the Monkey King in our group today?
The Ashima Rock:
The most famous highlight of the Small Stone Forest is the rock known as "Ashima," standing beside Jade Bird Pond. Ashima is the heroine of a centuries-old narrative poem beloved by the Sani people — a beautiful, kind-hearted, and courageous young woman who refused to submit to a cruel and powerful landlord, choosing instead to fight for her freedom and true love, even at the cost of her own life. Her story has been passed down for generations and has become a symbol of Yunnan tourism today.
Take a close look at the outline of this rock: she's carrying a flower basket on her back, gazing quietly into the distance — as if still waiting for the one she loves to return. This rock is regarded by the Sani people as the living embodiment of their legendary heroine.
Family Tip:
Tell the kids a simplified, child-friendly version of Ashima's story (kindness and courage are remembered forever), and encourage them to retell it in their own words to their parents — a fun way to help the story stick.
