Hello dear parents and kids! Welcome to Potatso National Park — the very first national park pilot in mainland China. I'm your tour guide today, and I'll lead you to explore this amazing natural wonderland hidden in Shangri-La. Let's start our adventure!
Let's start with some fun facts about the park. Potatso lies 22 kilometers east of Shangri-La city, and it's a national 5A-level scenic spot. Today's tour will take about 4 to 6 hours at a relaxing pace, so everyone can take your time and enjoy the views. The name "Potatso" carries a beautiful meaning. It's a transliteration from Sanskrit and Tibetan: "Pota" means the sacred land of the Goddess of Mercy, and "cuo" is the Tibetan word for lake. Together, it carries the blessing of ferrying all living beings across suffering to peace. In ancient Tibetan records, the lake water has "eight merits": sweet, cool, soft, light, pure, clean, and soothing to the throat and stomach. It's a truly holy and spiritual place.
The pilot zone of the park covers about 602 square kilometers, right in the core area of the Three Parallel Rivers World Heritage Site. The altitude ranges from 3,200 meters to over 4,600 meters. Since we are high up in the mountains, kids, please remember to walk slowly — no running or jumping. If you feel dizzy or short of breath, tell your parents or me right away. Inside the park, you'll find alpine lakes, old-growth forests, alpine meadows, streams and valleys, plus countless rare plants and animals. It's just like a huge outdoor natural museum, and we'll get to know these lovely "local residents" along the way!
Now we are at the entrance of the park — Xiagei Village. Look at these Tibetan workshops along the village: you can find pottery, wooden carvings, silver ornaments, and delicate horn carvings, all handmade by local Tibetan craftsmen. You can take a closer look with your parents if you're interested, but please handle the crafts gently. Soon we will get on the park shuttle bus. The bus drives clockwise, which is the same direction Tibetan people turn their prayer wheels, meaning peace and good luck. Please sit tight and hold on — our forest adventure is about to begin!
After about 20 minutes' ride, we arrive at our first stop: Shudu Lake. "Shudu" means "cheese as solid as stone" in Tibetan. The grass here is short but exceptionally nutritious. Yaks that eat this grass produce milk that makes rich, firm, high-quality cheese. That's why this place has been a precious grazing spot for Tibetan people since ancient times. This lake covers 120 hectares, just like a bright blue sapphire set between meadows and old-growth forests. There is a 2.7-kilometer plank trail along the lake, and it takes about 45 minutes to walk slowly. Walking on the trail, you can see the mountains and trees reflected in the water. When the wind blows, the ripples look just like a moving oil painting. Kids, have you noticed the white, veil-like plants hanging on the trees? They are called sunglo, a type of lichen.
They have very particular requirements for air quality — they only grow where the air is exceptionally clean, so they are nature's "air quality inspectors"! Sunglo is also a traditional Tibetan herbal remedy for rheumatism, injuries and coughs. It's extremely useful! Look at the lake outlet. It's called "Dangquka", which means "fishing with sticks" in Tibetan. Long ago, local Tibetan people traditionally didn't eat fish, so the lake was teeming with fish — you could even catch one with a wooden stick. After years of ecological protection, the fish population is growing back now. Can you spot any little fish swimming in the water? Please hold your parents' hands, stay back from the edge, and be safe.
Next, we come to Luorong Ethnic Cultural Village. "Luorong" means "a secluded place" in Tibetan. It got this name because it was deep in the mountains and hard to reach in old times. It's also the only native Tibetan village inside the park. The village is tucked in the valley, made up of three small settlements — upper, middle and lower. It's just like a secret base hidden in the forest. Here we can get a real taste of Tibetan daily life, and their three treasures: yaks, Tibetan mastiffs, and matsutake mushrooms.
The first treasure is yaks. They are the "all-around helpers" on the plateau: they provide milk, carry heavy loads, and are an important food source. Local Tibetan villagers can't live without them. Kids, look at the yaks grazing slowly on the grassland far away. Their thick fur is like a built-in warm coat, perfect for the cold. The second treasure is Tibetan mastiffs.
They are the "guardians" of the herders — brave and alert. One mastiff can watch over more than 200 sheep! Please enjoy them from a distance, don't get close or tease them. The third treasure is matsutake mushrooms. They are called "black gold in the mountains". They taste amazing and are very nutritious. But matsutake is extremely hard to grow artificially; they are all picked fresh from the mountains, which makes them extra precious. Diqing Prefecture, where Potatso is located, is one of the core matsutake producing areas in China, with top-quality mushrooms.
Finally, we reach our last stop — Bita Lake, the crown jewel of the park. Known as the "Pearl of the Highlands", Bita Lake sits at 3,539 meters above sea level. It was first developed for tourism back in 1993, and it's the most iconic spot in the park. The most amazing sight that kids love the most — the "drunken fish" phenomenon — happens right here! The lake is surrounded by azalea bushes.
Around mid-May of the lunar calendar (June or July), when azaleas are in full bloom, a special local fish called the Zhongdian leaf barb swims to the surface to eat the flower petals. The petals are slightly poisonous, so the fish get a little dizzy and float on their backs with white bellies up, just like they were drunk. The petals and white fish bellies make such a cute, charming scene. Locals say black bears even come down the mountain at night to eat these "drunken fish". Isn't that fun? "Bita" is a Tibetan transliteration meaning "a place where oak trees spread like felt". Look at the island in the middle of the lake. It's covered with spruce, fir and azaleas.
The trees are so dense that they look like a green felt blanket — that's how the island got its name. There are also ruins of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery built by the Mu Chieftain during the Ming Dynasty on the island, with ancient foundations and stone paths that hold hundreds of years of history. In Tibetan folk culture, people believe the landscape of Bita Lake naturally forms the "Eight Auspicious Symbols" of Tibetan Buddhism: Dharma wheel, white conch, treasure umbrella, scripture pillar, lotus, sacred vase, golden fish, and endless knot.
Kids, you can look for them with your parents in the island, the lake, and the mountains. Let's see who can find more! Now you can walk along the ecological trail by the lake, or take a boat cruise to see the island up close. Please hold your kids' hands, watch your steps, don't pick flowers, and don't feed the fish.
